Organic Gardening: Nurturing Your Garden Naturally

Nurturing Your Garden Naturally

At Me and a Tree, we believe that the true essence of natural living lies in nurturing our gardens with care and without the use of harmful chemicals like Glyphosate which is known to cause cancer and destroy beneficial bugs. Our commitment to organic gardening and permaculture principles has allowed us to create a thriving haven right in our backyard.

Step into our garden, and you'll find many different flourishing plants. From vibrant red tomatoes to fragrant herbs, we aim to cultivate a diverse range of species that coexist harmoniously. A natural garden is a testament to the power of companion planting and strategic placement. By carefully selecting plants that complement and protect one another, all can create a natural defense system against pests.

One of the most common challenges in gardening is combating the dreaded Japanese beetle. These voracious pests can wreak havoc on your plants, defoliating them in no time. But fear not, for we have discovered effective ways to keep these beetles at bay. Regular checks of our garden, diligent removal (with water and soap) of beetles, and dusting with crushed limestone have proven to be effective deterrents. By incorporating natural solutions into our gardening practices, we can enjoy healthy, thriving plants without resorting to harmful chemicals.

Aphids, those tiny nuisances that can quickly multiply and damage your plants, are another challenge we face. Rather than reaching for chemical sprays, we prefer a hands-on approach. By encouraging beneficial insects, they handle the tedious job. Picking off a few aphids from our tomato plants takes no time and sliding fingers up and down the stalk and dousing with diluted dish soap and water helps keeps them in check and also gives us an opportunity to spend quality time in the garden.

Overabundance of aphids warns that something is imbalanced in the soil. Bugs tell us many important things. Sometimes water, nutrients, fertilizer, and a good pH check is all that's needed to fix the bug problem. Spending a few moments checking plants gives one a chance to connect with nature and observe the intricate web of life unfolding before our eyes.

In our pursuit of gardening naturally, we've discovered the power of simple ingredients readily available in our kitchens. A mixture of dish soap and water with a little bit of neem oil has proven effective in controlling a range of pests, including aphids, mites, and whiteflies. We believe that the beauty of gardening lies in finding sustainable, eco-friendly solutions that nurture both plants and the environment.

But it's not just about warding off pests; it's also about embracing the wonders of nature and the vital role that pollinators (certain bugs) play in our garden's success. We have strategically planted flowers that attract bees, butterflies, and other beneficial pollinating beetles and bugs.  The sight of a bee rolling around in the purple pollen of our marshmallow blooms is not just awe-inspiring and adorable; it's a reminder of the essential role these creatures play in the pollination process.

Nature's Collaboration: Bug Assisting in Flower Pollination

Celebrating the Beauty of Pollinators and Beneficial Insects

In our garden, we embrace the presence of pollinators and beneficial insects as integral parts of our ecosystem. They are not just visitors; they are essential partners in the success of our plants. Welcoming these winged wonders brings a sense of balance and harmony to our garden, doing the hard work that would take us forever to do thus cutting down on garden work!

Bees, in particular, are like tiny little superheroes, tirelessly working to pollinate our flowers and ensure the reproduction of our plants. Watching a bee flit from blossom to blossom, collecting nectar and spreading pollen, is a mesmerizing sight. It reminds us of the intricate dance of nature and the interconnectedness of all living beings.

But it's not just the bees that we celebrate; there are a plethora of other beneficial insects that lend a helping hand. Pollinating beetles, ladybugs, soldier beetles, lacewings, and praying mantises are just a few examples. These remarkable creatures feed on garden pests like aphids, mites, and caterpillars, keeping their populations in check naturally without the use of chemicals.

By creating an inviting environment for pollinators and beneficial insects, we've witnessed firsthand how they contribute to the health and vibrancy of our garden. It's a delicate balance, and we take pride in fostering an ecosystem where both plants and insects thrive together naturally.

Companion planting plays a crucial role in attracting and supporting these incredible creatures. A sustainable garden is adorned with a tapestry of colors and scents, including flowers like African marigolds, echinacea, geranium, and marshmallow, which entice pollinators with their nectar-rich blooms, while the herbs like mint, oregano and thyme and certain flowers stave off the aphids and beetles. These flowers and plants not only add beauty and purpose to our garden but also act as natural pest deterrents, reducing the need for chemical interventions.

As we enjoy looking at all the colors of our garden, we witness the fascinating interactions between flowers, plants, and insects. Take for instance the orange and black margin-leathered wing beetle (see video below I captured) pollinating and hanging around our plants going from echinacea to echinacea flower, gently sipping nectar and eating pests while unwittingly aiding in the pollination process. These moments remind us of the importance of preserving and nurturing the delicate balance of nature. This little beneficial beetle helps pollinate and grow my garden without me doing anything but providing some flowers for him to enjoy!

This is why it's so important to learn how to combine the knowledge of sustainable agricultural practices without resorting to using chemicals to keep bugs at bay because there will always be a trade-off. One is that you never learn how to truly live naturally, and another is that we are harming our gardens and environment and will have to work harder the following years. Bee's are struggling to survive as it is and that means all bugs are effected when we take short cuts by using harmful chemicals.

In our commitment to sustainable gardening, we avoid the use of pesticides and herbicides that harm not only pests but also beneficial insects. We believe in the power of observation, education, prevention, and natural solutions and remedies to maintain a thriving garden. It's a journey of learning, adapting, and coexisting with the natural world around us, and it's not as hard as people think. It's a lot easier to educate oneself than seeing crops and hard work fail, and they will in one way or another when depending on chemicals. If you want to spend less time working in your garden and more time enjoying it - then I invite you to think about more natural ways to help you and your garden thrive. Embrace organic gardening and don't believe the hype of chemicals coming to your rescue—they come at a huge cost.

Please read the research that supports the findings that Glyphosate used as a common weed killer, implicated in causing Non Hodgkin's Lymphoma." Here's the full article talking about the problems with Glyphosate and Cancer in general and here's a direct quote from "The Environmental Working Group Website."

Scientific Studies on Glyphosate & Cancer.

"In March 2015, the International Agency for Research on Cancer, or IARC – an arm of the World Health Organization classified glyphosate as “probably carcinogenic to humans.  The 17-member panel of scientists reviewed almost 1,000 peer-reviewed, published studies on the potential carcinogenicity of the chemical glyphosate. In April 2019, the U.S. Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry released an analysis that gave weight to studies connecting glyphosate and non-Hodgkin lymphoma, and recommended monitoring children’s exposure to this toxic weedkiller."

What's more concerning is that in the article above it talks about how 80% of people were found to have this chemical inside our own body and that means me and you too. Evidently it is also used as a desiccant (used to dry up the oats and grains) so they don't mold likely. Eat organic or grow your own food if possible is my advice. Start slow and learn. You will be making an investment in your own health and that of your friends and family. Start with sprouting on your counter. It's an easy great help to you health! At Me and a Tree, we believe that the true beauty of a garden lies in its ability to thrive without the use of harmful chemicals. We have cultivated a garden that not only flourishes but also invites a multitude of beneficial insects and pollinators like the one you see above. Let us share our secrets to natural and organic growing so that you too can create a vibrant, pesticide-free haven.

Ladybug on Plant: Nature's Pest Control in Action

LadyBug visiting our organic garden.

Companion planting is at the heart of our gardening philosophy. By strategically pairing plants, we create a symbiotic relationship that deters pests and attracts beneficial insects. Marigolds, for example, not only add a burst of vibrant color but also repel nematodes, ticks, and other harmful pests. Their vibrant blooms act as beacons, inviting pollinators to visit and aid in the process of fertilization while keeping disease-carrying ticks away.

In our garden, you'll find a diverse array of plants, carefully selected to promote harmony and balance. Tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, and squash thrive alongside aromatic herbs like oregano, thyme, and spearmint. I also planted some Jerusalem Artichokes as a sacrificial plant and it did a wonderful job of hosting the Japanese beetle. They mostly went to that plant and stayed away from my other plants. The foliage of that particular plant is also tough enough to deal with them with the help of my crushed lime as a deterrent. Echinacea and bee balm add a touch of wild beauty while stinging nettles contribute to our herbal repertoire. French lavender, with its delicate fragrance, creates an enchanting atmosphere that also deters bugs and mosquitoes.

But how do we keep pests at bay without resorting to chemical pesticides? Observation is key. Regular checks of our plants allow us to identify potential threats early on. Bugs tell us secrets about our soil and if it's balanced or not so we listen to the garden. If we spot some aphids on our tomatoes, we take immediate action by amending the soil with more rich soil and nutrients as well as by sliding our fingers up and down the stalk (killing the aphids) while finishing off with soapy water and then dusting the plant (once it dries) with a little bit of lime on leaves and at the base of the plant. It's not just a means of pest control; it's an opportunity to connect with nature and spend quality time in our beloved garden.

I learn my bugs while I am out there, and it relaxes me to spend time learning and protecting my garden. It doesn't take a long time either. It's therapeutic and healing. Listen to what your garden is whispering to you through the bug life you encounter. It's communicating something important. A healthy vibrant garden can be had with these tips I discussed and will share more below.

To tackle the challenge of Japanese beetles, we employ natural deterrents. Strategic placement of herbs and flowers (companion planting) along with crushed limestone sprinkled around the affected plants acts as a barrier, deterring these voracious pests. For other garden issues, such as mites and whiteflies, we turn to natural remedies like neem oil with soapy water. These gentle yet effective solutions keep our plants healthy and thriving.

Maintaining healthy soil is another essential aspect of our organic gardening practices. We create our soil blends, incorporating compost, vermiculite, and perlite for optimal nutrient balance. By feeding the soil, we provide our plants with the foundation they need to flourish. It's a testament to the fact that healthy soil leads to healthy plants. Using natural fertilizers can be helpful but I have found that fully composted scraps and worm castings are the best along with mushroom compost too.

SOIL AND AMENDMENTS
Start simple and go from there. Your local nursery should have inexpensive potting soil. Any soil will do as long as it has the OMRI CERTIFICATION logo somewhere on the bag (usually on the bottom front corner or back).
The OMRI Listed® seal assures the suitability of products for certified organic gardening production. It's my choice. You can choose regular soil if need be but it may have chemicals.

As we tend to our garden, we also celebrate the presence of insects and pollinators. We welcome many species of bees, butterflies, and beetles, recognizing their vital role in the pollination process. We capture these moments of beauty through photographs and videos, capturing a glimpse of the intricate web of life that unfolds within our garden's boundaries.
